Giving Thanks at the Library

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. Actually, it’s next Thursday. That seems fast doesn’t it? But looking forward to that holiday is always a blessing. Thanksgiving has always been a time for families to get together and appreciate what they are thankful for – time spent with each other.

What do you like to do on Thanksgiving? I try and get out of having to cook; occupying myself with a Herculean mission that needs to be done, right.this.minute. My plan never works, and I’m tasked with having to go to the grocery store and stand in line, hugging a box of stuffing like it’s my first born. My actual first born, Fernando, wonderful teen that he is, is probably somewhere in the grocery store, trying to find garlic powder, or some other important seasoning. Like paprika. But I, if you haven’t noticed, after almost 3 years or reading my ramblings and observations, digress.

The week of Thanksgiving, the library in West Sedona will be closing early at 5pm on Wednesday the 27th, our Village location closing at its normal, new, 3pm, closing time. Both locations will be closed Thanksgiving and the preceding Friday. The Village library will reopen Saturday, the 30th, with normal operating hours. The main, West Sedona location, will reopen on Monday, December 9. Got your attention, didn’t I?

But why? But how can you be closed for such a long time? How can I get my holds? What about the wifi? Why is it so dark now so early? Glad you asked. Some exciting updates. Our building was built in 1994. It’s 30 years old now. Old enough to drive, gamble, vote, and study for it’s Masters in Library Science. And now is as good a time as ever to make a few needed updates to help all of our library experiences be better. Rome wasn’t built in a day, historians say it took about 1,230 days. We’re looking at about 10 days. But all is not lost! The Village library opens at 10am, and there isn’t really a lot of morning traffic going into the VOC so why not take a visit to the Village Library! It’s a beautiful scenic drive by the way. The Village Library has all the same

services as West Sedona, and you get to meet two of the best librarians, Aurelia and Marie, as well as our awesome volunteers!

In West Sedona, the wi-fi will still be on, from 6am until 10pm. Enjoy the fine weather with all the available outside seating in the Commons! You can still peruse books at the Friends of the Sedona Library bookstore! There’s always a monthly 50% sale on selected books and genres! And everyone can still search online for your favorite books and movies at sedonalibrary.org as well as use all the online resources available with your library card.

And just like a few years ago, curbside service will be back for patrons to still get the books and movies they’re waiting for in West Sedona. Just give us a call at 928-282-7714 and choose option 3, share your name, color, and model of your vehicle when you’re in the parking lot, and staff will meet you with your holds. You can even give us your book and movie returns! Curbside service will be available from 10am-5pm from November 30 to December 5. Remember there is no need to get out of your car because we can’t let you inside anyway. Oh, and we won’t be here on Sunday just like usual.

All these exciting changes are leading up to a celebration that no one will want to miss. But more of that in next week’s column, just don’t make any other plans for December 8th because everyone will want to be at our “Get Loud!” event—the biggest library celebration the Verde Valley has ever seen! But for now, Happy Thanksgiving and remember that I love pecan pie, and my Assistant Director does too.
